Olivet's first historical reference was made by Richard Marshall Scott, Jr in his May 29, 1853, journal entry, noting his family's attendance at a religious service on the outskirts of his plantation, Bush Hill.

The Olivet Chapel was completed and dedicated for community worship on June 12, 1853.

Both Olivet and St. Mark's were two of the seventeen missions established by the seminarians from the Virginia Theological Seminary between Bailey's Crossroads and Groveton.

The Rev. H. H. Holcomb was largley responsible for organizing the Olivet Mission.  Both the 1853 and the 1861 buildins were dismantled during the Civil War for its lumber.

The current Olivet Chapel is the fourth chapel built on property that they acquired for five dollars in 1893. It was consecrated April 4, 1893 by the Rt. Rev. Francis M. Whittle.

This little white Olivet Chapel is the last remaining landmarks of early Franconia and has been a meeting place for Franconia Episcopalians for over 100 years.

The Rev. Samuel A. Wallis, rector of Pohick Church, became the part time Rector of Olivet June 1882 and remained there for 12 years.

In 1953, The Rev. Charles Karsten because Olivet's first full time clergyman until 1957.

The drastic industrial changes made in the Springfield and Franvconia areas in the 1950s changed the llives of the farmers and their country style of living to an unexpected hustle-bustle city life.  During this building boom, Olivet built a new brick Church building which was consecrated in 1957 to handle the population explosion of new residents in the area.

Olivet has consistently provided a training ground for seminary students, a place for newly ordained priests to prepare for their future church, and a family parish environment.

In February 5, 2003, Olivet celebrated their 150th Anniversary.

125 Years Later.

On April 24, 2005, St. Mark’s celebrated 125 years!

In 2013, a St. Mark’s parishioner and long-time resident of Groveton authored a book under the Images of America series entitled “Groveton.”  Chapter 4, Early Churches addresses St. Mark’s history with some additional history and pictures.

In 2018, the church’s history was also included in the Early Groveton Elementary School history found at this link: https://grovetones.fcps.edu/about/history
